We must remind ourselves that the world is filled with mystifying wonder.

What is reality?

Colour, forms, space, time, life, emotions and consciousness are all so familiar to us that we do not often reflect on just how utterly inexplicable their existence is.

Science is brilliant at describing what those things do but not at what they are.

We have simply lived among these wonders for so long that most of them have stopped looking like wonders.

Flowmonics begins with a key to unlocking this mystery so we may find answers to the questions humanity has been asking for thousands of years:

What are we? Why are we here? Does life have meaning and purpose? Why do we struggle so much? Why can’t we all get along? What happens when we die?

Flowmonics answers all of them within a single connected account of reality, without invoking a supernatural dimension to fill the gaps.

Below is that account in its shortest complete form.

The World Is Stranger Than It Looks

Matter is only one part of reality. Space, time, colour, sensation, consciousness and emotion also somehow emerge from the universe’s deepest foundations.

Flowmonics proposes what those foundations might be — and what understanding them could reveal about who we really are and how life might become truly worth living.

  • We need to start thinking differently about reality.

We are used to thinking of the world as physical. But reality contains more than matter. It also contains forces, sound, smell, touch, taste and all the other things that make up the richness of experience.

Even matter itself is not the solid foundation it appears to be. When we look deeply enough, we do not find smaller and smaller pieces of ordinary material stuff. Matter itself seems to arise from something deeper than what we ordinarily think of as matter.

So matter, space, time and all the other features of reality exist because some deeper foundation made it possible for them to emerge at the beginning of our universe.

Every colour, every feeling and every thought grows out of the same mysterious foundations that give rise to the space between stars, the flow of time and causation that lets them shine, and the conscious observers who can experience and reflect on it all.

What might we discover if we knew what this mysterious something was?

Might it show us who we really are — and help us change so that life becomes truly worth living?

    Flowmonics begins with those questions.

The Best Account We Have So Far

To make sense of this extraordinary diversity, Flowmonics asks whether we really need a separate explanation for every feature of reality.

Perhaps space, time, matter, consciousness, meaning and love can all be built from the same fundamental elements.

Flowmonics calls these building blocks Sensicles.

  • What are Sensicles?

If empty space were the only thing that existed, we would have to explain only how its three dimensions appeared — difficult, but at least just one problem.

Reality gives us a much bigger task. We also have to explain time, causation, particles, blueness, pain, consciousness, meaning, love — and you.

Broadly, there are two ways to approach this. We can try to explain how each of these mysteries arose at the beginning of the universe, whether through a matter-first, mind-first, or dualist account.

Or we can ask whether there is a more fundamental building block from which all of them can be assembled.

Sensicles are Flowmonics’ proposal for such a building block. You can read a more detailed description of Sensicles here. They are elementary meaning-making elements, where meaning simply means the difference something can make to other things.

Flowmonics regards Sensicles as the strongest and most complete account we have so far been able to assemble because of the extraordinary range of things they allow to be explained and connected within a single coherent framework.

Seeing reality from this perspective changes everything.

All of Reality Becomes Ours

Sensicles, it turns out, are not merely building blocks. They act like a self-assembling language, combining into larger patterns of meaning that give rise to space, time, particles and minds.

If life can gain access to this foundational language, we could learn to read and write reality’s source code — opening limitless possibilities for shaping ourselves and the world.

  • The supernatural disappears. All of reality becomes accessible.

Like letters forming words, words forming sentences, and sentences forming stories, Sensicles arrange themselves into increasingly complex structures. Each type of structure makes a specific kind of difference to other things. That difference is its meaning.

Smaller meaning-making structures can therefore combine into larger ones, eventually giving rise to familiar things such as space, time, particles and minds. In Flowmonics, these are examples of highly complex structures of meaning-making.

    This has significant consequences.

If who or what we are is built from Sensicles, Flowmonics can take what religions have long treated as distant, supernatural mystery and reveal it as something entirely within this world: real, present and woven into the everyday mechanics of how existence actually works.

Flowmonics therefore proposes a grammar capable of explaining everything as a single reality in a single language.

And if life can gain access to that foundational grammar, it means that we can learn to read and write the very alphabet from which we are composed.

This would become less a matter of understanding the world from the outside and more one of understanding the world’s source code.

That would offer limitless possibilities for shaping ourselves and the world around us.

The full extent of those possibilities cannot be imagined.

A Direction Appears

That generative process of combining building blocks into larger patterns of meaning gives the history of reality a striking shape.

Sensicles form patterns we experience as particles. Those patterns combine into larger Sensicle patterns we experience as atoms, and those patterns participate in ever larger structures — stars, planets, living organisms, minds and eventually civilisation.

Across this immense history, Flowmonics sees a genuine trajectory: previously more independent parts repeatedly integrating into increasingly large and capable systems.

  • It's all about relationships.

Let’s backtrack to the very beginning of our reality. Flowmonics proposes a deeper level of reality from which our familiar reality — including space and time — emerges.

That deeper reality is still there. We have very little idea what it is, or whether space and time as we know them exist within it. It is likely to be a reality that is barely conceivable to us. But within the Flowmonics account, this deeper reality contains a collection of meaning-making elements called Sensicles.

So, before and at the emergence of our reality, there were Sensicles.

    What happened next?

Sensicles assembled into a vast number of patterns, giving rise to emergent properties such as space, time, causation and particles. Because these patterns are made from the same underlying building blocks, the differences they make can interact with and affect one another. That is why matter can exist with space and time and why thoughs can affect the brain and through it the body.

And so the process continued: smaller Sensicle patterns integrated to form larger patterns of meaning.

Patterns we experience as particles formed larger patterns we experience as atoms.

Gravity drew atoms and dark matter into the first stars and galaxies. Stars then produced heavier elements that enabled more complex molecules to form.

On at least one planet, molecules gave rise to increasingly complex chemical systems and eventually cells. Evolution then produced multicellular organisms, some of which developed nervous systems and brains.

Brains gave rise to minds capable of increasingly complex communication, language and technology, eventually enabling the emergence of a global civilisation.

Throughout this entire process, the same basic principle is at work: Sensicle-based patterns repeatedly combine into larger, stable and increasingly integrated systems.

Once we look at this entire history rather than at one moment within it, another pattern becomes visible. Reality is capable of repeatedly producing ever larger systems from previously more independent parts.

These developments are not a smooth march of progress. Still, a meandering causal flow can be traced from the beginning of our reality to where we are today. Where setbacks occurred, the path has, until now, always seemed eventually to recover.

Flowmonics proposes that the generative language of Sensicles reveals a genuine trajectory running through the development of reality to human life: a movement towards increasingly large, capable and integrated systems.

And this, as we will reveal shortly, points to the meaning and purpose of life.

Stable Relationships Form

What makes these larger integrations possible?

A thread runs through the entire story: relationships. Sensicles stand in relationship to one another, and those relationships form patterns that make new kinds of difference — new meanings. Those patterns then enter into relationships with other patterns, creating still larger patterns with new meanings of their own.

Some of these relationships become stable, allowing increasingly complex forms of reality to emerge and persist.

Flowmonics calls the principle that makes these relationships stable Bonding Love.

  • The world assembles and shows us where we're going.

The principle of Bonding Love operates at the most fundamental level of our reality. A particle itself is a stable relationship between sets of Sensicles.

Once such a relationship becomes stable, it forms a new meaning-making pattern capable of entering into further relationships and becoming part of still larger forms of organisation.

Flowmonics therefore identifies a recurring principle throughout reality: relational patterns become stable, allowing new levels of organisation to emerge and persist.

    Bonding Love is not emotion.

Atoms do not feel affection for one another.

Flowmonics uses love here to name the deeper principle through which relational patterns become stable integrations. The relationship becomes stable because each part changes the conditions for the others, creating a pattern that resists disruption and tends to hold itself together.

In this sense, Bonding Love is the principle that stabilises relationships and allows increasingly complex forms of reality to be built from them.

This principle becomes especially important when conscious life develops.

The Meaning and Purpose of Life

As Bonding Love builds increasingly complex and integrated systems, conscious life eventually emerges with the ability to recognise the trajectory it is part of.

Once conscious life can recognise this trajectory, two ancient questions look different: What is the meaning of life, and what is its purpose?

The meaning of life, taken as a whole, is the difference life ultimately makes to reality. Its purpose is our conscious participation in the trajectory of that difference-making.

At its furthest horizon, Flowmonics extrapolates this trajectory to Oneness: the full integration of matter, knowledge, capability and consciousness.

  • We are the meaning of life.

Life transforms a universe without conscious experience into one containing awareness, knowledge, creativity, relationships, civilisation and deliberate agency capable of abstract reasoning, emotions, beauty, hope and love.

That is unlike anything there is in the world of matter.

    We make a difference.

And if life’s trajectory continues, that difference may become vastly greater still.

So what, then, is the purpose of life?

For Flowmonics, purpose is our relationship to that direction — to life's trajectory. Our larger purpose is to participate consciously in the difference life makes to the world through its movement towards deeper and more capable integration.

At the furthest horizon, Flowmonics extrapolates this trajectory to culminate in the full integration of all matter, knowledge, capability and consciousness. Ultimate Oneness.

This Oneness does not destroy individuality any more than a water wave destroys its individual water molecules.

This trajectory has already been unfolding for billions of years. And we are part of it.

We make a very specific kind of difference, and that difference has huge potential.

You are part of that story.

Death Does Not Appear to Be the End

Is there life after death?

Flowmonics proposes that Sensicles can form fundamentally different kinds of patterns. Matter is made from Sensicle patterns in the form of particles, but particles are only one possible form of Sensicle organisation. Space, blueness and mind arise from very different kinds of non-particle patterns. The non-particle mind therefore does not obey the same laws of physics as particle-based matter.

So, if the mind is constructed from highly stable non-particle patterns, what happens when the body dies?

If the theory is substantially correct, continued mental stability after bodily death is not merely possible but very likely. The conscious person therefore continues — making embodied life a formative stage of a much longer existence.

  • Is the mind sufficiently stable?

The important question is this: is the mind a highly stable pattern?

We know that highly stable non-matter patterns exist. Space, time and even the blueness of blue are examples of this. This matters because, if the mind is such a stable system, it might remain stable after the body dies.

Within Flowmonics, matter and mind are distinct forms of organisation that emerge from the same deeper Sensicle reality.

Flowmonics proposes that the initial, instinctive layer of the mind is assembled by the brain from non-particle patterns. The rest of the mind then develops on top of this layer, including conscious awareness, the self, memories and thought.

The important point is that the mind is not composed of particles. It therefore does not obey the same laws of physics as particles do. It has no force-particles that need to provide energy to maintain the shape formed by matter particles.

So when the brain dies, there is nothing to indicate that the mind decomposes in the same way that the brain and body do. Decomposition is a feature of physical bodies, not non-physical minds.

If the model is substantially correct, continued mental stability is therefore not merely possible; it is very likely. Flowmonics therefore believes that the conscious person — you — continues after the body falls away. Memory, identity, relationship and development remain part of an unfolding life.

Embodied existence therefore becomes a formative stage of a much longer existence.

And that means the meaning-of-life project does not end when the body dies.

If life’s meaning is the difference conscious life makes to reality, and its purpose is our conscious participation in the trajectory towards greater integration and capability, then that project continues with us.

    We continue the project.

What you become here therefore matters enormously, because you take that becoming with you. The understanding you develop, the capabilities you build, the relationships you form, and the kind of person you become all shape how you can participate in that continuing trajectory.

What other people create in you matters.

What you create in them matters.

The relationships through which people shape one another are no longer merely temporary arrangements between people destined to disappear. They become part of continuing conscious histories — histories that continue to influence the larger trajectory of conscious life.

This life is therefore not an isolated episode. It is the stage at which we begin to become the people who will continue participating in the project beyond it.

This does not make this life less important.

    It makes it more important.

You Were Never Separate

If the conscious Self continues beyond the body, the next question is what that continuing Self is actually part of.

Nothing in this story exists entirly separate from everything else. If nothing develops in isolation, then neither do we — neither in this life or the one to come.

Every event enters an ongoing web of causes and influences that Flowmonics calls the All-Flow. You are a distinct Self — a stable, integrated causal flow within it — shaped by the All-Flow while continually shaping it in return.

You are distinct, but never separate.

  • We are part of a fully integrated field of influence.

Every atom, organism, brain, mind, person, relationship and civilisation emerges through interactions with other parts of reality. Every event becomes a cause of later events. Every influence enters another chain of influence.

Flowmonics calls the totality of this causal reality the All-Flow.

Within it, you are a distinct Self: a stable, integrated causal flow. But you are not sealed off from the All-Flow. You are shaped by it.

The way the All-Flow shapes you changes the causal flow of your mind. Your mind, through its actions, then shapes the All-Flow in return. That influence propagates through the All-Flow, changing it, and those changes become part of what shapes you next.

There is therefore a continuous causal relationship between you and the reality of which you are part: the All-Flow shapes you; you shape the All-Flow; and the changed All-Flow shapes you again.

You and reality are therefore one, fully integrated field of influence.

You are distinct, but never separate.

Evolution Introduced Separation

Within the All-Flow, the emergence of conscious life introduced something new: the experience of separation.

Once a living being can distinguish “me” from “not me”, an individual point of view emerges.

From this come self-preservation, values, fear and conflict — but also cooperation, trust and compassion.

This sets the stage for a new form of Bonding Love: Conditional Love — separate individuals supporting one another through mutual benefit.

  • We profoundly changed reality.

Before conscious life, reality contained a continuous flow of cause and effect, with none of it experiencing itself as separate from anything else.

    Conscious life changed this.

Once a living being can recognise “me” and “not me”, reality is no longer experienced as a single undivided whole. A distinct point of view has appeared. This is one of the unique differences conscious life has made to reality.

From that distinction comes individuality. The Self now has something to preserve, so it begins to judge the world according to what helps or harms its continued existence.

Things become desirable or dangerous, good or bad, valuable or irrelevant.

Awareness of vulnerability also creates fear. And from the struggle to survive arise forces such as anger, greed, envy and aggression.

But separation produces more than conflict.

Because individuals survive better through cooperation, it also gives rise to trust, kindness, loyalty, patience, friendship and shared meaning.

Flowmonics sees this as an evolution of reality’s principle of Bonding Love.

Bonding Love describes the formation of stable relationships through which previously separate components can achieve things unavailable to them alone. With conscious individuals, this develops into Conditional Love: relationships based on mutual benefit, giving and receiving, through which separate individuals support one another and strengthen their chances of flourishing.

Separation, then, is not simply disconnection. It is the birth of the individual point of view. From it come self-preservation, choice, values, fear, struggle, cooperation, relationship and meaning.

Conscious life turns an indifferent universe into one in which things can matter.

The Load-Bearing Forces of the Mind

As conscious life became more complex, the mind developed feelings and emotions to categorise and prioritise threats and opportunities.

Alongside them, the mind developed four load-bearing forces that help orient and stabilise it, especially under pressure: meaning, purpose, self-worth and belonging.

Together, they help us understand what matters, how to act, why our own well-being matters, and where support comes from.

When these forces fail, the mind can lose its bearings — unsure what matters, what to do, whether it matters, or whether support is available.

  • The root cause of well-being decline.

Feelings and emotions help the mind categorise and prioritise threats and opportunities.

The more intense the feeling or emotion, the more narrowly the mind focuses on its cause in an attempt to deal with it.

To improve this process further, the mind developed four additional load-bearing forces.

Meaning focuses the mind on what makes a difference to its well-being, allowing the rest to be ignored.

Purpose focuses the mind on the actions required to pursue or avoid those meaningful things.

Self-worth focuses the mind towards recognising itself as part of what matters.

And belonging focuses the mind on maintaining the relationships and conditions that make continued access to those things possible.

When the mind loses its sense of meaning, purpose, self-worth or belonging — especially when under pressure — it is in deep trouble. It no longer knows what is important, what it needs to do to improve its well-being, whether its own well-being even matters, or whether anyone is there to support it.

Flowmonics therefore identifies failure of these load-bearing forces as one of the primary causes of a decline in well-being.

Grounding the Mind

These load-bearing forces can stabilise the mind — but only if what they are anchored to is itself stable.

In practice, meaning, purpose, self-worth and belonging are often tied to circumstances in the physical world that can change or disappear. When those anchors fail, emotions can spike and disrupt the mind.

Flowmonics proposes grounding the four load-bearing forces more deeply in what has now become available: in life’s trajectory, the All-Flow, our intrinsic influence on the future, and our place within a larger continuing story.

This gives the mind a stable, reality-grounded basis to return to when emotion narrows its view.

  • Stabilising a mind under pressure.

Because what mattered to the mind was largely found outside it, the four load-bearing forces of meaning, purpose, self-worth and belonging became mostly anchored in the physical world.

But the physical world is an unreliable, uncertain and unstable place in which to anchor anything.

As a result, these load-bearing forces often fail. When they do, emotions such as fear, anger and anxiety become more likely to spike. As they intensify, the same emotional systems designed to inform the mind can increasingly disrupt it, leading to irrational decision-making and bad outcomes.

The mind therefore began searching for something more stable: an overarching narrative into which meaning, purpose, self-worth and belonging could be anchored — a framework capable of withstanding the chaotic nature of the world.

Flowmonics proposes that these four load-bearing forces can be grounded directly in reality rather than left entirely dependent on whatever happens to be available in a person’s life.

Your life has real meaning because you are part of the difference conscious life makes to the trajectory of life.

Your life has purpose because you participate in the trajectory through which conscious life is becoming increasingly integrated and capable.

You have intrinsic worth because, through the nature of the All-Flow, you change the future simply by being here.

And you belong because you are part of the All-Flow — part of the wider field of influences and therefore part of a grand, meaningful story that is very likely to continue, with this life being the formative period of something much more spectacular.

Once these load-bearing forces are anchored in the nature of reality itself, the structure of the inner world can begin to change. You increasingly know what matters, know what to do, do not question your worth, and know that you belong to something profoundly meaningful and worth being part of. You now have a stable, reality-grounded basis to return to when emotion temporarily narrows the frame.

This anchoring can help stabilise emotions and have a significant impact on your sense that life is truly worth living.

From Conditional to Unconditional Love

With the larger picture now in place — our meaning and purpose, our place within the All-Flow, our continuing existence, and a deeper grounding for the mind — conscious life is ready for another evolution of love.

Conditional Love helped build families, communities and civilisation by enabling separate individuals to cooperate for mutual benefit. But because it depends on return, it remains limited by the architecture of separation.

Unconditional Love removes that limit. It allows us to support the flourishing and integration of the wider whole even when nothing is returned by the particular person we help — making it a more powerful way of participating in life’s trajectory towards ever greater integration and capability.

And when uncertainty makes the loving choice unclear, Memory Ethics asks: What choice is most likely to create brighter rather than darker future stories for everyone affected?

  • How the impossible becomes possible.

Most relationships are built on Conditional Love — giving to receive and receiving to give.

This improves cooperation and gives rise to trust, kindness, loyalty, patience, friendship and shared meaning. It is a form of love arising between separate individuals who are better able to survive through coordinated cooperation.

Conditional Love is not false love.

It is an extraordinary evolutionary achievement. It helped build families, friendships, communities and civilisation. But it remains constrained by the ancient architecture of separation.

Flowmonics proposes that conscious life is now capable of another development:

    Unconditional Love.

Unconditional Love becomes a practical means of building far-reaching relationships. At the same time, a life truly worth living becomes increasingly sustainable as a person:

    • embraces the view of life as a single field of influence — the All-Flow;

    • anchors the mind’s load-bearing forces of meaning, purpose, self-worth and belonging in reality itself;

    • and realises that this life is preparation for an even more profound life to come.

Together, these change life from being survival-oriented to participation-oriented.

This is the crux of what Flowmonics is about. But even with that orientation, uncertainty can make it difficult to know what to do.

For those moments, Flowmonics introduces Memory Ethics:

What choice is most likely to create brighter rather than darker future stories for everyone affected?

    Love supplies the orientation.

Memory Ethics helps navigate the consequences.

Unlike Conditional Love, Unconditional Love does not require a return from the particular person towards whom it is directed.

The return comes instead from fulfilling one’s purpose in achieving the meaning of life — and from the resulting experience of a life truly worth living.

What This Means

Put together, Flowmonics presents reality as one unfolding field of influence in which mind and matter emerge from the same deeper foundations, life moves towards greater integration, conscious existence continues beyond bodily death, and meaning, purpose, worth and belonging can be grounded in reality itself.

Running through it all is an evolution of relationship: Bonding Love, Conditional Love and Unconditional Love.

Flowmonics asks whether understanding reality this way can help us build lives truly worth living within it.

  • Towards Oneness

Reality is deeper and stranger than the familiar physical world through which we first learnt to understand it.

Flowmonics proposes that beneath our familiar reality are fundamental meaning-making elements called Sensicles. Through relationships, Sensicles form patterns with new meanings; those patterns form relationships of their own; and stable relationships become the building blocks for still larger forms of reality.

Mind and matter can therefore be understood as very different expressions of the same underlying Sensicle reality.

Running through this process is Bonding Love: the principle through which relationships become stable enough for new forms of organisation, capability and meaning to emerge.

Across billions of years, those integrations reveal a vast trajectory towards increasingly large, coordinated, capable and integrated systems — from particles and atoms to stars, life, minds and civilisation.

That trajectory gives us a way of understanding the meaning and purpose of life. Life’s meaning lies in the difference conscious life makes to reality; our purpose lies in consciously participating in the direction of that difference.

At its furthest horizon, Flowmonics extrapolates that trajectory towards Oneness: the full integration of matter, knowledge, capability and consciousness without the destruction of individuality.

You are a distinct conscious Self within this unfolding reality — a stable, integrated causal flow that both shapes and is shaped by the immense field of influence Flowmonics calls the All-Flow.

You are distinct, but never separate.

The Flowmonic account of mind also gives strong reason, within the theory, to believe that conscious life continues after bodily death. Embodied life therefore becomes a formative stage of a much longer existence.

And that means the meaning-of-life project does not end when the body dies.

    We continue the project.

What we become here, what others create in us, and what we create in them continue as parts of unfolding conscious histories and of the larger trajectory of life.

Understanding our place within that trajectory, our continuity, and our relationship to the All-Flow also allows meaning, purpose, self-worth and belonging to be grounded in something deeper than circumstance, status or personal opinion.

That gives the mind a more stable foundation from which to place immediate emotions inside the whole story, rather than allowing the immediate moment to become the story.

And running through the development of conscious relationship is another progression:

    Bonding Love.

    Conditional Love.

    Unconditional Love.

Conditional Love enabled separate individuals to cooperate for mutual benefit and helped build families, communities and civilisation. But because it depends upon return, it remains constrained by the architecture of separation.

With the larger picture now in place, Flowmonics proposes that conscious life is capable of another development.

Unconditional Love removes the need for the return to come from the particular person towards whom the love is directed. It allows us to contribute to the flourishing and integration of the wider whole — making Love itself a way of consciously participating in life’s trajectory.

This is why Unconditional Love sits at the centre of Flowmonics.

Not because an authority commands it.

Not because self-sacrifice is inherently virtuous.

Not because human beings should somehow suppress millions of years of survival architecture through sheer moral effort.

But because once reality, self and relationship are understood differently, Love itself can be understood differently.

Unconditional Love becomes an evolved way of participating in what reality is already doing.

And Flowmonics becomes more than an attempt to explain existence.

It becomes a way of learning to live within existence as it actually is.

    The ultimate proposition is enormous:

That we are more than we thought.

That life means more than we thought.

That our future extends further than we thought.

That we belong to something vastly larger than we thought.

That what we do matters further than we thought.

And that a form of Love humanity has treated for millennia as an almost impossible moral ideal may actually be something we can learn to sustain once the rest of the picture is in place.

That is the possibility Flowmonics asks you to explore.

Not merely a better explanation of reality.

A new understanding of reality capable of helping us build lives truly worth living within it.
