From survival
to meaning

How life developed the foundations that keep us psychologically grounded — why those foundations became unstable — and how Flowmonics proposes to rebuild them.

THE STRUGGLE

Life began with survival.

Cooperation then became one of evolution’s most powerful survival strategies.

As conscious social life developed, reciprocity made this collaboration more reliable.

I help you; you help me.

You help me; I help you.

Still, the world was filled with uncertainty.

To help the mind navigate an uncertain world, it developed five load-bearing forces:

  • Meaning tells us what matters.

  • Purpose tells us what to do about it.

  • Self-worth tells us why we matter.

  • Belonging tells us where we fit.

  • Continuity gives what matters a future.

These forces became anchored in things that could change or disappear:

relationships, success, status, communities, beliefs, health and circumstances.

Instability appears.

When those anchors become unstable, the forces can become unstable with them. Emotions intensify, resilience weakens, and judgement can narrow.

Religion partly solves the problem.

Religions offered a powerful solution by grounding meaning, purpose, worth, belonging and continuity in something larger and more enduring than ordinary life.

Scientific discovery weakened that anchor for many.

As scientific explanations displaced parts of traditional cosmology, many people found it harder to sustain that framework with the same certainty.

As that certainty weakened, replaceability emerged as a new solution.

Modern life increasingly offered another strategy: when one source of meaning, purpose, worth belonging or continuity disappears, replace it with another.

Individualism placed more responsibility on each person to construct meaning, identity and belonging for themselves..

Pressure mounted.

As life became faster, more complex, more competitive and more changeable, the replaceability model came under increasing strain.

The strain becomes visible.

Flowmonics argues that this mounting strain helps explain some of the anxiety, fragility and loss of direction visible in modern life.

THE SOLUTION

We need a more reliable, stable solution.

Not in circumstances, because circumstances change. Not simply in belief, because beliefs can be lost. To make the foundation as stable as possible, Flowmonics asks whether meaning, purpose, worth, belonging and continuity can be grounded in something deeper: the nature of reality itself.

That requires us to ask what reality fundamentally is.

A new possibility emerges.

In Flowmonics, meaning begins with something very simple: the difference one thing can make to another. Flowmonics proposes that reality is ultimately built from elementary forms of difference-making (or meaning). It calls these Sensicles.

If this account is right, it gives those load-bearing forces a deeper and potentially more stable foundation.

  • What are they?

To explain Sensicles in basic terms, think of the distance between two points.

The first point is made up of three Sensicles.

First, there is the sense of position. We use this symbol: â—†

If you don’t give it a value, it is like a position that could be anywhere or everywhere. It’s just the idea of "positionness".

When you add a value, the position emerges as somewhere specific.

    â—† â—¢10

However, something has to allow them to be added together, so that’s the function of the set Sensicle. This is the symbol we use: [  ].

That’s our first, very basic, emergent position.

    [ â—† â—¢10 ]

So for distance, we need two of those positions with different values, and we also need to bring them together in a set.

    [ [ â—† â—¢10 ] [ â—† â—¢20 ] ]

That’s what a very basic description of distances as an emergent property of Sensicles looks like.

Each Sensicle makes a certain type of difference to other Sensicles. That's their type of meaning or difference-making. A Sensicle is never changed, but it allows new difference-making properties and phenomena to emerge.

From Sensicles like these - and there aren’t all that many - we can construct emergent things like 3-dimensions, time, matter, causation and minds.

A trajectory emerges.

Across cosmic, biological and human history, the Sensicle grammar causes smaller systems tp repeatedly become parts of larger, more capable ones.

Flowmonics interprets this recurring pattern as a trajectory toward increasingly complex, stable, and coordinated integration, with conscious life as its most developed known expression.

A larger meaning of life comes into view.

The trajectory gives life a larger meaning: the difference life makes to reality is the creation of increasingly rich forms of integration and flourishing.

Life does not merely exist within reality. Life changes what reality can become.

Some good news: death may not be the end.

If the mind is a stable pattern in this deeper level of reality, bodily death need not destroy the pattern itself. Flowmonics therefore opens a case for continued consciousness — developed in the full theory.

On this account, the five load-bearing forces can be grounded differently

You now have an opportunity to ground your mind’s load-bearing forces in the much more stable foundation of reality itself:

  • Meaning now becomes the difference your life makes to reality’s trajectory.

  • Purpose becomes consciously helping life move towards greater integration and flourishing.

  • Self-worth becomes your unavoidable contribution to what reality becomes.

  • Belonging comes from being an inseparable part of one interconnected reality and its unfolding narrative.

  • Continuity becomes the possibility that your participation in this larger story extends beyond bodily life.

We shift from survival to flourishing.

Once the load-bearing forces are firmly anchored in reality, your focus can widen from individual survival and securing what you need to a wider flourishing: creating better conditions for yourself, others and the wider field affected by what you do.

Your life becomes part of a story larger than survival, achievement or circumstance — a story in which what you do genuinely contributes to what reality becomes.

Reciprocity evolves.

Reciprocity need no longer be the ceiling of cooperation.

Flowmonics aims beyond it towards Unconditional Love — made more sustainable by grounding the individual in the larger framework.

The aim is not merely to obey these virtues, but for the framework to gradually make them more natural, expressed through more persistent qualities such as kindness, honesty, understanding, patience, compassion, forgiveness, courage and hope.

Understanding reality more deeply, your place within it, and how to live opens the possibility of building a life truly worth living.
